Borough ready for Fairtrade Fortnight
Date published: 14/02/2008
Rochdale Council, Rochdale Forum members and supporters are putting the finishing touches to plans for Fairtrade Fortnight (25 February - 9 March) a two week celebration and promotion of the fair-trade message. Many shops in the borough will have special displays, and there are a variety of events taking place aimed at promoting the products, which give a fair deal to people in the developing world. Goods are sold at a price that covers the cost of production plus a premium to use for business, community or environmental programmes, securing long term trading relationships and a better quality of life for those involved.
On Wednesday 20 February Fairtrade Celebration 2008 will be held at RoFTRA Resource Centre, Newgate, Rochdale. There'll be presentations by local supporters, free food and drink plus fair-trade products for sale. The Mayor of Rochdale will formally launch the new Fairtrade Guide during the event held between 5.00 pm - 8.00 pm.
There are now over 3000 Fairtrade certified products on the shelves from peppercorns to roses, bananas to wine - and by buying these products you can make a difference!
Organisers are encouraging everyone to get involved, including workplaces, retailers, café's, schools, community groups as well as individuals. The Fairtrade Foundation can provide ideas and supply promotional items.
Businesses supporting the campaign are asked to contact the Forum so they can be included on their 'Fairtrade Friendly' listings. For more information, or to book a place at the Fairtrade Celebration 2008, contact Hazel Stobbs at Rochdale Borough Council on 01706 922027 or email hazel.stobbs@rochdale.gov.uk
