Rochdale's first Fair Trade market stall

Date published: 27/09/2006

Rochdale was awarded Fair Trade Borough status earlier this year because the town had reached the required number of retail outlets, etc., selling or offering fairly traded goods.

Following on from this, a stall on Rochdale Market is to open on Friday 6 October 2006 - the Mayor, Councillor Jean Hornby, will officially open the stall at 11.00am.

This is a social enterprise called 'Fair For All'.  Its aim is to complement the present retail outlets, church and community representatives who currently sell fairly traded goods, by offering goods to a wider clientele.

Items for sale will include food, jewellery and gifts. The stall will be open all day on 6 and 7 October and then every Saturday from the end of October.

Commenting on the opening of the stall, Jan Hicks of Rochdale Fair Trade Forum said: "We hope that what we are doing assists in some small way in making poverty history."
