Date published: 13/02/2008

Paul Rowen MP is hosting a North West Disability Conference Saturday, 23 February from 10.00am - 3.00pm at Richmond Hall in Central Rochdale.  Keynote Speakers at the event include Danny Alexander MP, the Lib Dem Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and a representative from the British Paralympic Association.

Mr Rowen, who previously had responsibility for disability issues, has now had his job widened to cover work, welfare reform, and disability employment.

Mr Rowen said: "Under the Leadership of Nick Clegg MP, the Liberal Democrats are aiming to reach out and not just listen to party members but also to the wider community.  Please note that everyone is welcome, wherever or whatever organisation you come from.  It is not a party political event, more an opportunity to have your say on a number of key issues and influence our party policy.

We plan to make this day interactive and will be looking to do group work, aimed at delivering real outcomes and solutions to the ongoing barriers facing disabled people.  We have invited a number of other speakers and looking at issues such as transport, young people, and employment opportunities for the disabled, issues around carers and will look at any other issues that people suggest."

Mr Rowen will also be launching a Rochdale Disability Survey, which will be sent to all businesses in Rochdale after the event and will be available to any interested parties.  This will look at specific issues in Rochdale and beyond.

The event is free, the only cost will be £5 for lunch and other refreshments.  The event is supported by Kidz Aware and Special Abilities, the Stroke Association, the Disability amp; Carers Service, Leonard Cheshire Disability, the Royal British Legion, Step by Step Living Network, Action-on-Access and many others.
