Sport Relief Mile at Springhill Sports Centre

Date published: 13/07/2006

The Sport Relief Mile at Springhill Sports Centre and Athletics Arena on Saturday 15 July is the first major event since the £1 million Lottery funded track was officially opened in the Spring. Nearly 400 people have registered for the 'Mile' and this means that entry on the day will be limited to a maximum of 100 people.

Rochdale Council, organiser of the event, has also put together a wide range of entertainment to make it a community fun day for all ages. Giant footballers 'Wreckam and Bookham' will be making an appearance during the day together with equally large purple flamingos! Many of the activities are free including children’s games and  face painting. Giant inflatables, including a penalty shoot out and bouncy castle, will add to the fun and refreshments are also available.

The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Jean Hornby will officially launch the Sport Relief Mile at 11am and anyone entering on the day should arrive by 10.15am for registration. Children from neighbouring primary schools will be part of a Samba Band helping to set the runners off.

More musical entertainment will come from the Rochdale Music Service Junior Band and from pupils and staff from Springhill High School during the afternoon which will also see sports activities on the track with a Mini Olympics for 11-16 year olds.

Support for the event has come from the Prince’s Trust in Rochdale, whose volunteers will be helping to steward the day and from the Wardle Spring Water Company who are providing water for the runners free of charge. Organisers have also joined forces with Springhill Hospice to help raise money with stalls and tombolas, a tug of war competition and a balloon race.

Springhill Fun Day runs from 10.30am to 3pm at Springhill High School on Turf Hill Road, off Kingsway and entry is free.
