River Spodden - Environment Agency news release
Date article online: 10/07/2006
Following the major pollution incident the River Spodden suffered on the evening of Friday, 30 June when thousands of litres of a vivid blue coloured liquid was discharged into the River Spodden from an outfall pipe running from the former Turner Brothers Asbestos factory site, the Environment Agency has issued a news release:
-----------------------------------------
Following a good deal of support from local residents, the Environment Agency's investigations into the incidents in the River Spodden are proceeding.
To determine how the blue chemical reached the river we will be undertaking dye testing and camera investigation to assess the condition of the sewers on site. This part of the investigation is expected to be carried out early next week.
The dye used by the Environment Agency is called fluoresceine and is harmless to the environment. It is likely to turn the river a vivid green colour for a short time. We would want to assure residents that this is part of the investigation and not a release of waste chemicals.
Once the investigation is complete the Environment Agency should be in a position to determine whether any enforcement action is necessary.
For enquires or to report further incidents on the River Spodden or any other rivers in the area call the Environment Agency's 24-hour free phone hotline on 0800 807060.
