12th annual Mega Mela will go ahead as planned
This year's Mega Mela will go ahead this Friday 7 and Saturday 8 July as planned.
An appeal by Greater Manchester Police against the decision by Rochdale MBC's Licensing Sub-committee to grant a licence for the Mega Mela was dismissed by Rochdale Magistrates Court on Tuesday 4 July at the end of a lengthy hearing that lasted until 7:15 pm.
After listening to representations from the police, the ambulance service, and local residents, including the manager of Springfield Park Nursing Home, as well as the organising team for the event, the Magistrates were satisfied that the Mela should go ahead.
The organisers of the Mela were represented by Molesworths Bright Clegg's Licensing amp; Regulatory Affairs team. The head of the team, Paul Dixon, said after the hearing:
"The Magistrates were clearly impressed with the hard work and detailed planning by the organisers of the Mela. The preparations for this year's Mela began a fortnight after the successful 2005 Mela. Since then the organisers have work closely with all the relevant bodies, including the police, fire amp; ambulance services, and Rochdale MBC, to ensure there will be no risk to public safety or undue disturbance to local residents during the 2006 Mela at its new venue in Springfield Park.
"Events such as the Mela are central to the development of cultural diversity and vibrant and exciting communities where artistic freedom of expression is a fundamental right and greatly valued.
"We are pleased to have been able to support the organisers by obtaining the licence thus ensuring that the 12th annual Mega Mela will go ahead as planned."
