Mercedes stolen at knifepoint at Bury Road/Mellor Street traffic lights
A female driver had her car stolen at knifepoint on Mellor Street at approximately 2:50pm on Wednesday 5 July.
The woman was queuing at traffic lights in her Mercedes Convertible at the junction of Mellor Street and Bury Road when a young man, who was shirtless, leant into her car and asked if she had a light, before jumping into the car.
The woman's screams alerted other drivers who tried to aid the woman. The assailant pulled a knife from his pocket and threatened the two men trying to help.
The woman struggled and was able to get out of the car.
The two men tried to rescue the woman’s bag from the passenger seat but the assailant again threatened them with the knife.
Police were on the scene quickly, but not in time to prevent the thief speeding off through a red light up Mellor Street towards Spotland Bridge.
