Bishop of Manchester welcomes next BBC Head of Religion and Ethics

The Bishop of Manchester (the Manchester Diocese includes all the C of E churches in the Rochdale Metropolitan Borough), the Rt Revd Nigel McCulloch, has welcomed Michael Wakelin's appointment as the BBC's next Head of Religion and Ethics.
 
He said: "I welcome Michael's appointment. He has significant experience of making successful programmes for Religion and Ethics. He is well placed to grasp the  challenge of producing increasingly creative and innovative programmes about faith issues. The public's appetite for them is growing - as seen by the very large response to the recent first-ever Radio Times Readers' Award for Best Religious Programme."
 
Michael Wakelin, 45, is currently Acting Head of Development for the Religion amp; Ethics Department and has been Series Producer of Songs of Praise for the last five years. Michael lives in South Manchester with his wife and two children and is a Methodist lay preacher in the Macclesfield Circuit.
 
He says: "I'm very proud to be taking on this prestigious role.
 
"I've worked in the BBC's Religious Department for over 20 years and am passionate about the range and depth of its output.
 
"I'm committed to taking the department forward as a key part of the BBC's future and its Manchester base."
