Rochdale activist honoured for lifelong commitment to peace

George Abendstern, a well known Rochdale activist,  was one of four veteran peace campaigners presented with a very special wooden bowl by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) national chairwoman, Kate Hudson, at a Greater Manchester and District CND musical evening held at Cross Street Chapel, Manchester on 17 May 2006.  The plaque reads: 'To George… In appreciation of a lifelong commitment to PEACE from GM&D CND'.

Kate thanked George for his ongoing work and reminded all those present that, more than ever before, they need "to campaign with urgency against the government’s twin follies of developing ever deadlier nuclear weapons and building new nuclear power stations."

George joined Kate in condemning threats to use military force against Iran and noted: "the hypocrisy of a prime minister who wants to pursue nuclear power "with a vengeance’ while threatening another country for considering the same mistaken policy."

The presentation took place in . George is a member of Littleborough and District Peace Group and treasurer of both Greater Manchester and District Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and Rochdale Stop the War Coalition.
