Rochdale: another 39 people jobless
Date published: 22/03/2008
Unemployment has continued to fall nationally, but in Rochdale the figures for those out of work have increased.
In January, there were 4,008 out of work, but last month the total had risen by 39.
Across the UK, the number of people in work has reached a record high of almost 30 million.
The jobless total was cut by 32,000 in the three months to January to 1.61 million, while the numbers on job seeker’s allowance fell by 2,800 last month to 793,500. It was the 17th consecutive monthly fall in the claimant count, although it was the smallest reduction since October, 2006, the Office for National Statistics said.
There were 4,000 working days lost through industrial disputes in January, the lowest total since last April.
