Cannabis reclassified as Class B drug

Speaking after the announcement that cannabis is to be reclassified as a Class B drug, Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davies said: "The Advisory Council are to be congratulated for resisting political pressure and basing their recommendation on theobjective evidence.
Gordon Brown has ignored the advice of these experts and instead appealed to irrational tabloid sentiments.

"My fear is that a Prime Minister desperate to find someone who will vote for him now wants to win a cheap headline by returning to the bad old days when a hundred thousand young people each year were arrested, fined and all too often imprisoned for cannabis possession.

"It is ridiculous to cause so much distress to individuals who have done nothing that could cause harm to anyone other than themselves.

"The use of cannabis has fallen since it was downgraded to a Class C category. Will Ministers take responsibility if this stupid and irrational decision leaks to an increase in its use?"
