Rochdale’s new transport boss

Date published: 12/05/2008

Central Rochdale Councillor Zulfiqar Ali is now Rochdale Borough’s first ever Lib Dem Transport Boss. Councillor Ali, who was previously Cabinet Member for Community Cohesion and Housing, says he is relishing his new challenge. He will be the Rochdale Spokesperson on the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive, subject to confirmation at the next full meeting of the Council.

Councillor Ali, who has replaced former Labour Leader Allen Brett said: “I am pleased to accept this latest challenge. A fully integrated transport system must be a priority to maximise our ambitious regeneration plans.

"I will be ensuring that we have a strong voice on this influential committee.

"I have been actively involved in the Metrolink Campaign from the start.

"In my role, I will overseeing our brand new Bus Station, the long awaited extension of Metrolink and the results and practicalities of the Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) bid decision. I will, of course be continuing our campaign to deliver Metrolink into the heart of our Town Centre, as well as looking at potential brand new projects including a regular free shuttle bus from our Railway Station into our Town Centre.

“I look forward to working with my Lib Dem Colleagues to ensure that we see real improvement to our transport system that will benefit our residents.”

I hope Zulf's life long experience as a professional taxi driver will help him in his new role and he will contribute his knowledge towards better transport facilities for the residents.

Not sure about that, John. Be interested to see how Zulf's views on congestion charging match those that were told to residents in his ward.
