Council leader called on to withdraw threat

Date article online: 15/05/2008

Labour Leader Colin Lambert has called on Council Leader Alan Taylor to withdraw his comments urging local organisations not to invite the new Mayor, Robin Parker, to functions. Councillor Lambert also called the comments of Paul Rowen's agent David Hennigan, posting on the Rochdale Online forum that he will see the Mayor removed within three weeks - and has wagered £100 to that effect, a disgrace.

Councillor Lambert said: "I find response from the Liberal Democrat leader neither Liberal or Democratic. Having played their silly games last night at the Ceremony for the Mayor Making they then state they will pick their moment and opportunity to undermine the Mayor.

"I ask Councillor Taylor to withdraw this threat and return to day-to-day politics of running the borough in the best interests of the people of the borough.

"The events planned for the coming year will benefit two charities. Rochdale Hospice and The British Heart Foundation. You are now not only turning your anger on the Mayor but on the people of the Borough and the two chosen charities who will benefit from the fund raising events.

"You will make Rochdale look silly in the eyes of those who read your comments.

"The latest comment on the online forum from David Henningan, that he will have the Mayor removed within three weeks is a disgrace, and given his position with Paul Rowen MP it brings the position of the MP into this disgraceful action."

Dave, this is what you said - it's at the top of the thread:

"Give me 3 weeks and and he's gone."

This is what I actually said:

"I agree - in fact I'll be happy to wager that within 8 weeks Robin Parker will have to stand down anyway! Proceeds to the Ex-Mayor's charity!"

Colin's reading of this is a bit different.

No Colin - I did not say that. I said he won't be Mayor in 8 weeks and bet Steven Burke £100 on this.
