Police closed Bury Road near the junction with Roch Valley Way and Sandy Lane.

The closure is due to a collision between a car and a motorbike near the junction.

Officers attended and discovered a boy, believed to be 17-years-old, with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

It is believed he had been in collision with a Peugeot 206 and had been riding a Suzuki motorbike prior to the collision.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision remain unclear.

Police are also keen to trace the driver of a black BMW 3 Series, thought to be an Asian woman, who is believed to have left the scene following the collision.

Detective Inspector Daryl Chadwick of Rochdale CID said: "Tragically this has resulted in the death of a young man and I am keen to hear from anyone that may have witnessed the collision to come forward.

"I am especially keen to hear from the driver of a black BMW that we believe may have witnessed what happened. It may be that you do not know anything about the collision, but if you were driving a black BMW along Bury Road at the time of the incident please come forward."

Anyone with any information is asked to call Rochdale CID on 0161 856 4646 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Two cars, a Renault Clio and a Ford Ka, also collided further down Bury Road and this has resulted in Bury Road also being closed from Mellor Street. Both drivers are shaken up but suffering only minor injuries.
