Decision on Proposal to Discontinue Sunny Brow Nursery School

Date published: 11/06/2004

The Office of the Schools Adjudicator has published a decision on a statutory proposal to discontinue Sunny Brow Nursery School in Rochdale from 31 August 2004.

The adjudicator, Mr Alan Parker, rejected the proposal. The LEA wanted to close the school to reduce surplus nursery places in the area and use the money saved to develop provision elsewhere. Guidance from the Secretary of State for LEAs and Adjudicators says that there must be a strong case for a nursery school to close. The adjudicator concluded that whilst it was expensive to run, Sunny Brow was an excellent, popular and highly valued school. The LEA's case for closure was therefore too weak to succeed.
