M6 Theatre Company Nominated for Prestigious Award

Date published: 18/06/2004

Rochdale's M6 Theatre Company's production Breathing Space has been shortlisted by Canadian judges for a Dora award, the Canadian equivalent of an Olivier. The production has been nominated for the Outstanding Touring Production category.

The play explores the lives and feelings of four people living in exile and celebrates the courage of a boy and his mother hiding from domestic violence and their developing friendship with their neighbours, two exiled Kosovan asylum seekers.

The Doras recognise outstanding achievements in Toronto theatre and previous winners have included choreographer Bob Fosse and director Sam Mendes.

Dot Wood, M6's Artistic Producer said: "All of us at M6 are absolutely delighted with this nomination.

Touring in Canada was wonderful enough, but to be recognised in this way for the quality of our work is most rewarding. It’s all very exciting!," she added.

This year is a particularly large occasion for the Doras as it is the 25th anniversary of the glitzy annual awards.

The Doras are named after Glaswegian Dora Mavor Moore, a well-loved teacher and director who helped establish Canadian professional theatre in the 1930s and 1940s. Each winner receives a bronze statue cast from an original by sculptor John Romano.

This year 33 awards will be presented in the categories of General Theatre, Independent Theatre, Dance, Opera, and Theatre for Young Audiences.

The awards will take place at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto on Monday 28 June.
