Buying fireworks? Buy from the Good Guys
Date published: 07/09/2004
Trading Standards officers in Rochdale are joining with the Safer Communities Partnership, Greater Manchester Fire Service and Police to launch an initiative aimed at keeping people safe and reducing firework nuisance in the lead up to Bonfire Night.
The 'Good Guy' scheme will, amongst other conditions, require retailers to register with Greater Manchester Fire Service. Members must also demonstrate that they are responsible retailers and are willing to comply and abide by a strict code of practice.
This includes storing fireworks safely, restricting the sale of fireworks to a maximum of three weeks before bonfire night and refusing sales to anyone under the age of eighteen.
Rochdale is the first borough in Greater Manchester to introduce the scheme, following new legislation restricting how and when fireworks can be sold. Signing up for the scheme enables retailers to benefit from free advertising. Local people buying fireworks will be encouraged to only purchase fireworks from responsible retailers taking part in the scheme.
Laurence Bell, Consumer Protection & Registration Services Manager stated "A similar scheme has been very successful in Merseyside. The scheme should be a great boost in reducing the dangers and nuisance often associated with the firework period."
Divisional Officer Robert Bonner, of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, added, "Every year the fire service in Rochdale has to deal first hand with the injuries, destruction and anti-social behaviour associated with the irresponsible or careless use of fireworks. Whilst our officers will continue to vigorously enforce the firework storage regulations, we applaud this initiative by Trading Standards to make bonfire night an enjoyable, lawful and, above all, safe time for the people of Rochdale."
Any retailers interested in joining the scheme or requiring further information should contact Rochdale Trading Standards Service on (01706) 864179 or e-mail trading.standards@rochdale.gov.uk
