Rochdale Police Launch their own Cadet Scheme
Date published: 26/10/2004
Assistant Chief Constable Ian Seabridge has launched the new voluntary Rochdale Police Cadet Scheme at Rochdale police station. Fifty young people, aged 16 to 19, applied for the scheme and, after interviews had taken place, twenty were chosen to be the first in Rochdale to take part and work towards a BTEC qualification in modern day policing and two key skills learning awards.
The 38-week long course includes modules in the history of policing, first aid and physical fitness and there will be guest speakers from a variety of Greater Manchester Police departments including the Drugs Team, the Family Support Unit and the Underwater Search Team. The cadets will also gain practical experience by supporting officers on community projects throughout the Rochdale area.
Chief Superintendent Terry Sweeney, Rochdale's Divisional Commander said: "This is a great opportunity for these young people to learn more about the variety of work undertaken by the police as well as gaining practical experience. We've got a fantastic group of students, some who want to pursue a career in the police, others who are simply interested in the work we do. I'm looking forward to watching their progress and want to wish them the best of luck with the course."
Rochdale Community Safety Partnership has provided funding for the course, and the students will enrol at Hopwood Hall College, Rochdale.
