Decision on Phase 3 of the Metrolink before Christmas

The economic, social and environmental situation in Greater Manchester is dependent on the decision; a change of mind by Transport Minister Alistair Darling would increase job prospects, business development and leisure facilities. Over 41,500 people from Rochdale and Oldham have signed petitions to support Phase 3 of the Metro, despite Alistair Darlings decision to refuse funding the system last summer.
The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce is keen to emphasise the importance of the transport system to the authorities. The Chamber held a Business Summit in Oldham on Friday 5 November for the business people of North Manchester to voice their opinions to the authorities.
Rochdale MP Lorna Fitzsimons said: “Absolutely none of us had expected Alistair Darlings decision, it’s good to see that MP’s have since stood together for the metro to sort this out”. Lorna was confident about the future of Rochdale’s transport systems. She continued, “We are almost on deal making territory, but we still need your support. It is essential that you send us your letters and voice your opinions”.
Also present were John Early, President of Greater Manchester Chamber, and Metrolink Leader Geoff Inskip. Mr Inskip said: “It’s not all about money. The Metro is the cornerstone of public transport. Look at Salford Quays; it was built on expectation of a tram system. Once we have Phase 3 of the Metro, there will be 10 million passengers a year using the services”.
The Greater Manchester Business summit is one of numerous meetings that have taken place since Alistair Darling’s surprise decision.
