Rochdale Sixth Form College celebrate 'Class of 2015'

Date published: 07 January 2016

Rochdale Sixth Form College recently hosted their fourth annual awards ceremony. The evening was an opportunity for students and staff to get together to celebrate their collective success over the past two years; former students were invited to an evening at Rochdale Town Hall, along with their parents/carers, to receive their A Level certificates.

The ceremony opened with a welcome speech, whereby college Principal Julian Appleyard and Chair of Governors Dame Pamela Coward D.B.E, commended the class of 2015 for achieving a "very impressive" pass rate of 99 percent.

As the awards commenced, two students from each subject area were awarded for notable achievement and progress. Additionally, five students were also recognised by the college for outstanding achievement:

The Outstanding Contribution to College Life Award went to Farah Hussain, in recognition of her hard work both in and outside the classroom. Teacher of Chemistry & Applied Science and Student Engagement & Involvement Coordinator, Jen Hopwood said: “As a model student she went above and beyond in her role as President of the Student Union. Her ideas allowed the RSFC Student Union to flourish and grow and I am sure she will have similar success in her undergraduate studies.”

The Outstanding Contribution to Performing Arts Award went to Lucy Kershaw. Commending Lucy for her strong director and mentor skills and for supporting other students throughout her studies, Teacher of Drama, Laura Ainscow-Gorst describes Lucy as: “A young woman with an extremely bright future ahead of her in the theatre industry, the performing arts department are extremely proud of everything she has achieved.”

The Outstanding Contribution to Sport Award went to Jacob Wright for his leadership skills and ability both in the classroom and on the football pitch. Teacher of PE, Tom Halliday commented: “Jacob is a fine example to the college and will continue to excel in sport at University.”

The Outstanding Dedication Award went to Cerys Hanes for her determination across all subjects and dedication to improving her knowledge. Subject Leader of Psychology, Paul Nevin, commented: “Cerys was a delight to teach and due to her skills of motivation, independent study and resilience she will excel at university.”

Student of the Year 2015, who has proudly joined three other college alumni on the ‘student of the year’ plaque, was awarded to Anusia Battersby. As the first ever Rochdale Sixth Form College student to gain a place at the University of Oxford, staff at the college spoke very highly of Anusia, commending her for her thirst for knowledge, polite and driven attitude, charismatic personality and general positivity.

Deputy Principal, Ruth Szolkowska said: "It was wonderful to see so many students return from their universities and careers to celebrate their achievements with staff, friends and family. The evening is a highlight of the year when we can all recognise the hard work of students and staff that continues to make the college outstanding for all the right reasons."

Rochdale Sixth Form College would like to thank all local and national organisations who sponsored the event and give a special thanks to The Rotary Club of Rochdale East who sponsor the college £250 each year.
