Flying Horse crammed for Flood Fest

Date published: 02 February 2016

The Flying Horse was crammed for a very successful festival to raise money for Rochdale’s flood victims on Sunday (31 January) night.

Generous local musicians took to the stage for free as part of the Flyer Flood Fest. Groove Encounters, Finger Blast, Lee Feeney, The Scattering and Boomin’ were joined by an excited crowd who came to take part in the Sunday fun.

Donations totalled £500, all of which will be donated to the people of Rochdale still struggling to recover after the Boxing Day floods.

Howard Wilkinson, who set up Rochdale Flood Support, said: “It was an incredible turnout, so many people. I caught the sets from The Scattering which was a brilliant Celtic Rock mix, and Boomin, who were just amazing.

“With the rest of the fund standing at just over £3,000, and with another gig night still to come this Friday at The Brickcroft, I am hoping to get up to around £5,000. An application is in with the Government to get match funding, to double whatever we manage to raise, which would be brilliant if we can get it to near £10K.

“The response from Rochdale people has been amazing. When I started my small effort to raise some funds, I did not expect to see what has happened, with so many people offering to do their part as well, organising comedy nights and gigs, providing auction items and raffle prizes. It really is heart-warming and a credit to the town.”

Ben Boothman, owner of the Flying Horse Hotel, said: “It was a brilliant crowd and a brilliant evening. We want to thank all the musicians who took part for free. It was all for a good cause but it was also a cracking atmosphere and a really good night in general.”
