Parents warned after children’s toy company VTech hacked
Date published: 10 February 2016
Parents are being told to be wary of V Tech’s electronic toys after a recent hacking which allowed access to children’s photos and chat logs.
Over six million child accounts were affected after “unauthorised access” was gained in November last year (2015).
Vtech, which specialises in electronic toys and educational material for children, had confirmed that its app-store database 'Learning Lodge' had been hacked.
Today (Wednesday 10 February) the BBC reported that VTech’s new terms and conditions state that parents must assume responsibility for future breaches.
VTech told the BBC: "Since learning about the hack of its databases, VTech has worked hard to enhance the security of its websites and services and to safeguard customer information," said a spokeswoman.
"No company that operates online can provide a 100% guarantee that it won't be hacked.
"The Learning Lodge terms and conditions, like the T&Cs for many online sites and services, simply recognise that fact by limiting the company's liability for the acts of third parties such as hackers.
"Such limitations are commonplace on the web."
