Ellis Robinson: Huge support for paralysed footballer

Date published: 04 March 2016

Former Rochdale academy player Ellis Robinson, 17, dreamed of becoming a professional footballer but he has been dealt a devastating blow after a freak accident left him paralysed from the shoulders down - leaving his family worried that he might not walk again.

Ellis was crushed under a fellow player during a five-a-side game at Hathershaw College in Oldham last week, and lost all feeling below his chest. He was rushed to Salford Royal Hospital where he underwent eight-hour emergency surgery to repair damage to his spine.

Medics now say that the young footballer may never walk again, and that there is a long way to go before he will regain full movement of his legs.

A spokesperson from Rochdale FC said: “Rochdale Football Club and Academy are shocked and saddened to hear the tragic news regarding Ellis Robinson.

“The former Dale Academy player, who is 17-years-old, suffered serious neck and spinal injuries last week, following a freak accident while playing the sport that he loved. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ellis and his family at this time, and we are offering our full support.

“Rochdale Football Club will also be raising money for Ellis – full details will announced in the coming days. From everyone at Rochdale Football Club, we wish Ellis the very best in his recovery. Get well soon, Ellis.”

Ellis has a long journey in front of him as he begins the fight to walk again, and his family and friends are raising money to aid his road to recovery.

They’ve set up a GoFundMe page for donations:
