St George parade fills the streets of Heywood

Date published: 24 April 2016

The streets of Heywood were buzzing with energy as crowds gathered for the annual St George’s Day parade.

Hundreds of people arrived at Harwood Park School this afternoon (Sunday 24 April) to catch the start of the action, which included a marching band followed by Heywood’s scouts, cubs, beavers, rainbows, brownies, guides, and senior guides all waving their flags with pride.

Deputy Mayor Ray Dutton was among the crowd cheering on the marchers.

The parade continued through the town centre streets before finishing for a special service at St Joseph’s Church.

Revered Paul Daly, who led the service, said: “It makes me proud to see the church so full, the amount of people who are here is a testament to the hard work being done by the local scouts.

“We have to give special thanks to their leaders too, who generously give their time and effort. Without them there would be no such scouts in Heywood, and indeed so such parade like the one we had today.

“Thank you everyone for taking part. It is wonderful to see everyone come together for this occasion.”
