Margaret Hopkinson was named the Woman of Rochdale 2016 at the annual Woman of Rochdale luncheon.

Mrs Hopkinson, 82, from Milnrow, was described by her nominators as a “champion of community involvement” who has dedicated decades to key groups and activities in the Milnrow area, including the Milnrow Amateur Dramatic Society, which she founded in 1971.

She also helped secure Butterworth Hall in 2003, after demolition was on the cards, and negotiated an arrangement to put on plays at the Ellenroad Steam Mill and Museum.

When presented with the award, Mrs Hopkinson spoke of her disbelief. She said: “I am used to being on stage, but this is very different. I am completely overwhelmed. It is not something I ever thought I would get and I am so thankful to those who nominated me.”

Nominator Jane Riley said: “I nominated Margaret for this award as she has been a champion of community involvement for over 40 years. In 1971 Margaret and her friend founded Milnrow Amateur Dramatic Society (MADS) to provide an activity and entertainment for the local community.

“She has been a key driver in the society throughout and for most of this time has been a committee member and has even chaired the group on numerous occasions. In addition to putting on live theatre for the community, MADS has undertaken charity fundraising, put on plays for the elderly at sheltered accommodation in Milnrow and Rochdale, and supported other events including the Milnrow carnival.”

“In 2003, Margaret was one of the people who worked to secure Butterworth Hall in Milnrow for the local community when Rochdale Council wanted to demolish the building. Margaret worked with other members to secure the transfer of ownership to the Moor End Development Trust.

“At the age of 82 years of age, she shows little sign of slowing down. I feel like Margaret’s work in the Milnrow community has made a lasting and positive difference to Milnrow. Although she would not seek recognition herself, I feel that she is fully deserving of this award for her long-standing work in commitment for her local community.”

Things got heated during this year’s ceremony, as two fire officers 'interrupted' a speech before bursting into song and dance, getting everyone up from their seats to join in the dancing.

Mayoress Cecile Biant joined in the fun along with the rest of the top table.
