Rochdale man’s campaign to remove the Airbus 225 Super Puma from the skies

Date published: 04 May 2016

A Rochdale man who works in the offshore oil industry has set up a petition to remove the Airbus 225 Super Puma from the skies, after last week’s tragedy in Norway which killed 13 people.

A petition set up by David Winder, a marine supervisor from Castleton, has already attracted 23,000 signatures.

Mr Winder said: “When I saw the most recent tragedy in Norway I thought to myself that enough is enough. The number of signatures gathered in such a short time go to show how many people share my concerns. I am happy that so many people are coming forward to support this petition.”

The BBC reported last week how as well as the most recent Norwegian tragedy, the Super Puma’s recent history is blighted by incidents.

Mr Winder added: “On Friday evening, as I sat in my cabin offshore, I decided to do something about it, I couldn’t take any more. I started an online petition asking the CAA to remove the Air Worthiness Certificate for this airframe, as this incident was one to many.

"I never expected the response it received. Only a couple of days after starting it, over 20,000 people signed it, and its increasing minute by minute.

“Many who have signed it, have left comments as to why they're signing, and those stories of people who've lost loved ones in previous incidents with the Super Puma make me even more determined to get the CAA to remove this airframe from service.”
