Man suffers serious head injuries after attack outside Middleton pub

Date published: 06 May 2016

A man was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after being attacked outside a pub in Middleton on Saturday 23 April.

Police officers attended the Brittania Pub, Middleton at around 12.10am to reports that a 47-year-old man had been the victim of an attack. The victim was walking out of the pub with his friends when he was approached by a man who punched him in the face.

His friend followed the offender, but he escaped after running off towards Townley Street.

The victim fell to the floor and hit his head on the pavement, causing significant head injuries which required hospital treatment.

A 21-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of Section 20 assault and was bailed until 2 July 2016.

Detective Constable Andy Robinson said: “This poor man was left recovering in hospital for several days as a result of this assault, and he was perhaps fortunate to have escaped a more serious injury.

“Far too often we have seen these attacks can have fatal consequences, and any time someone hits their head on the pavement like this there is a danger of incredibly severe head injuries.

“We have made an arrest in this case, but we need more information, so we’re asking anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward and tell us what they saw.

“Your evidence could be instrumental in the successful conviction of the offender.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting incident number 230416/0015 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
