Work starts to improve paving in the Town Centre

Date published: 22 August 2016

Preparation work has started today (Monday 22 August) to improve paving in the Town Centre.

The Walk, lower Yorkshire Street and Baillie Street are to be paved in natural stone, matching the stone on the newly refurbished river opening site.

Greg Couzens, whose hairdressing salon is located on The Walk, said: "In 2007 I campaigned to get the whole of Yorkshire Street paved in York stone but it was decided that it would be too expensive.

"We can learn from the Victorians, that York stone lasts.

"The Walk was block paved in the 1990s and already needs replacing.

"The newly paved area will link the heritage area (river opening) to the shopping area."

On The Walk, due to the narrowness of the street, the paving work will be carried out overnight so as to cause as little disruption as possible.
