Public transport just the ticket for Athletes’ Parade

Date published: 21 September 2016

Transport leaders are gearing up to help an influx of spectators get into Mnachester to welcome home triumphant Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

Big crowds are expected to line the streets and cheer on returning champions as they take part in an Athletes’ Parade through the city on Monday 17 October 2016.

A number of road closures will be required in order to accommodate the parade. Further details of the parade route, timings and road closures will be released nearer the time.

Since it was announced that Manchester would host the celebrations, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has been working closely with operators and other partners to plan and prepare for the event.

Demand is expected to be high across all forms of transport, so extra trams and trains are being put on to help keep the city moving and get people where they need to go. TfGM is also working with partners to provide additional temporary park-and-ride sites for those travelling from further afield.

TfGM’s Events Manager, John Fryer, said: “We’re working closely with the transport community and other partners to plan and prepare for this event.

“There will be extra trams, extra trains and extra parking spaces so that we can keep the city moving and ensure that all those who want to come into Manchester to celebrate can do so.

“We’ll have more information and advice before the event and on the day itself, but while we finesse our plans I’d encourage people to please plan ahead, think about how they’re going to make their journey and allow plenty of time to get to where they need to go.”
