Two local Labour councillors have expressed their delight at the re-election of Jeremy Corbyn as Labour Party leader.
Councillor Aasim Rashid said: “This is a good thing. We have a bright future ahead now. Jeremy was elected leader twice in the last year: he has a good command and good leadership. He won with 61.8% of the vote, which was higher than last time.
“Now we can fight the Tories and their financial cuts, which are giving the working class a hard time.
“This will bring a clean slate and unites the party.”
Councillor Chris Furlong said: “I am absolutely delighted that Jeremy has received a second landslide win in just over a year to lead our party.
“Jeremy won by a huge majority with members, affiliates and supporters, increasing his vote with the members by over 50,000.
“This second convincing mandate means the party can now unite behind our democratically elected leader.
“From this Saturday (1 October), we will be challenging the Tories’ grammar school plans with our national campaign for inclusive education for all.
“The Tories’ plans will mean segregation of our children.”
Councillor Richard Farnell and Liz McInnes MP, who both supported the losing candidate, Owen Smith, were approached for comment. At the time of publication, no response had been received.
