Firefighters target Deeplish with fire safety campaign
Date published: 30 November 2005
Rochdale firefighters will be knocking on residents doors in Deeplish offering householders the opportunity to have a free home fire safety check and free smoke alarms fitted as part of a fire safety initiative to ensure that every home in Rochdale has at least one working smoke alarm within 5 years.
The firefighters will be in Deeplish from 6-13 December and aim to reach around 3,000 households in the area. They will ask householders a number of questions and offer them a scheduled appointment when they will come back and carry out the fire safety check and where necessary fit smoke alarms. They will also put up posters inviting people to contact them if they need a smoke alarm.
Borough Commander, Dave Astley said: “The tragic event in Rochdale in June this year, in which three young children and a young mother died, shows the life shattering results of not having a working smoke alarm fitted.
“If you know somebody who you think might be at risk then let us know. We have firefighters and specially trained teams available to check the fire safety in your home and fit smoke alarms where required. Too often we attend fires where the battery of the smoke alarm has been removed and not replaced. Checking the alarm weekly and ensuring the batteries are replaced when necessary will ensure that they work when needed”.
