GMP launches Christmas safety operation

Date published: 01 December 2016

Rochdale Neighbourhood Policing Team has launched a month long town centre operation during the Christmas period. The operation will target criminal activity and antisocial behaviour.

As part of the operation, the team will share crime reduction advice to those visiting the town centre. Purse bells and ultraviolet marker pens will be given out in Rochdale throughout December so people can tag personal items such as mobile phones.

The operation – codenamed Elf  - will provide extra high visibility foot patrols in specific hot spot areas for the day and night time economies providing reassurance to the public, deterring shoplifting and pickpocketing, as well as maintaining radio contact with the CCTV operators, licensed premises and retailers. Police will also be holding crime surgeries in the town centre which are accessible and open to the public.

The Rochdale Neighbourhood Policing Team would like to encourage those visiting the town centre to remain safe, reminding revellers of the dangers of excessive drinking encouraging people to enjoy the festivities without putting themselves in danger.

GMP is also advising those visiting the town centre to park in secure well-lit areas, not to leave gifts on show and to always lock their car. Furthermore shoppers are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings and keep wallets, handbags and other valuables secure and out of sight. When using a cash point ensuring that you cover your pin.

Police Sergeant Daniel Shirazi said: “The town centre neighbourhood team have been running this initiative for a number of years which has seen success, measured by a noticeable drop in crime figures during this period. The extra patrols are always a welcomed sight for the businesses and visitors to the town centre who feel reassured by the increased police visibility.”
