Give the gift of reading this Christmas

Date published: 02 December 2016

Children’s literacy charity Beanstalk, which recruits, trains and supports reading helpers, is making an appeal for individuals in the local community who would love to support children one to one with their reading.

Reading is one of the most crucial parts of learning for any child to be successful academically and also in every day tasks, however 49% of primary school children in Rochdale are unable to read to the required level.

Beanstalk aims to reduce this statistic through placing trained reading helpers into local primary schools to provide consistent one-to-one support to improve reading levels, increase overall confidence and help children gain the vital literacy skills they need to succeed in education, employment and life.

Charity representative Lorna Towner said: "Our volunteers are vital to help us continue supporting more children across Rochdale. If you have a passion for reading and can share this with a child then please make contact to offer your time to this important cause."
