Tree art in Denehurst Park

A park bench, a café or a children's play area might be more traditional sights in a park, but environmental management teams at Rochdale Borough Council have also created a work of art in a 200-year-old Beech tree for visitors to Denehurst Park to enjoy.

The centre cavity of the tree had been damaged through vandalism over the years and to stabilise the tree, council workers came up with an ingenious idea that would create a fun attraction for visitors, the tree will be sited next to a children's play area which will be developed later in the year.

Filled with stones and tiles using a similar technique to dry stone walling, the design has added complexity through building on angles, adding small tunnels and even a gargoyle!

The holes and gaps within structure will also act as a habitat for the parks bustling wildlife.
