Khuram Shaikh was 'stabbed 40 times with broken bottles'

Date published: 24 April 2017

Khuram Shaikh, 32, a Red Cross worker from Rochdale, who was attacked and killed at a hotel while on holiday in Sri Lanka on Christmas Day in 2011, was shot and stabbed more than 40 times with broken bottles, an inquest has heard.

A witness, giving evidence for the first time, said when he was attacked it was as if he was being "targeted".

The inquest in Heywood recorded a conclusion of unlawful killing.

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk, who helped Khuram's family with their campaign for justice, said: “While I was pleased to meet the family at the inquest, it was also sad to learn in more detail what had happened on that tragic night when Khuram was so horribly murdered. It was a great privilege to campaign with Nasser Shaikh to bring his brother’s murderers to justice. Even though it took us years to get his murderers imprisoned, and we had the support of people like the Prime Minister and Prince Charles, I take some satisfaction from finally seeing justice done.”

Sri Lankan politician Sampath Vidanapathirana was jailed for 20 years for killing Mr Shaikh in July 2014.

Lahiru Kelum, U. Sama Deshapriya and Praneeth Chathuranga were also convicted of Mr Shaikh's killing.
