Statement from the leader of Rochdale Council on the Manchester Arena attack

Date published: 23 May 2017

Rochdale Council leader Councillor Richard Farnell said: “I’m sure I speak on behalf of the whole borough when I say our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this horrendous and cowardly attack.

"The fact it was our children who were targeted, somehow, makes it all the more unbelievable.

"This morning I have asked council staff to help and support the efforts being made across Greater Manchester in the wake of this atrocity. We are helping and offering support and assistance where we are able to.

"This attack must not be used as a wedge to drive our communities apart; that is exactly what terrorists want. Now more than ever we need to stand united and show these people they will never win.

"Finally, I would just like to pay tribute to our brave emergency services who ran towards the danger just as everyone else was being evacuated to safety. We are lucky to have such diligent and vigilant men and women protecting us on a daily basis.”
