Weekend travel advice

Date published: 26 May 2017

Despite the terrible events of this week the upcoming bank holiday weekend promises to be an exciting one with competitors, spectators, shoppers and music fans visiting Greater Manchester for a number of high profile events.

Transport to and from the events is expected to be very busy and there are still a number of impacts due to the terrorist attack and subsequent closure of Manchester Victoria.

Additionally there will be a number of road closures and alternative routes will be in use affecting bus and road users.

At present no rail or Metrolink services are operating to or from Manchester Victoria but please keep checking back on a regular basis for further updates.

Journey times are likely to increase so you should plan ahead if you are taking part in, spectating or simply avoiding the events.

Rail improvement work is also taking place from Saturday 27 until Tuesday 30 May affecting services between Manchester and the Northwest.

Timetable alterations and bus replacement may be in place for some Northern and Transpennine Express services.

Advice for your journey

  • Plan ahead if you are travelling on these days.
  • Travel early and leave plenty of time to complete your journey.
  • If possible try to avoid driving and use the various enhanced public transport options. However if you need to use the car please refer to our handy map below which shows most-affected routes.
  • Please also use Greater Manchester’s Park and Ride sites as these provide the best option to get you where you need to be in the quickest manner.
  • Use the motorway network if you are travelling by car across the city.
  • There will be extra capacity across all Metrolink services (including where bus replacement is in operation) who will provide a frequent service to and from the event locations.
  • Expect operating tram and train services to be busier than usual.
  • Remain alert and vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to the Counter Terrorism Hotline 0800 789 321 or in an emergency 999.
