Pilot frailty service takes off as scores helped to ‘stay well’

An innovative scheme is ensuring older residents of the borough can access key services to improve their health and well being.

Any person aged 65 or over living in the borough of Rochdale can sign-up to the Staywell service to help them socialise, build their confidence and join local community groups.

The scheme, which is run by Direct Health on behalf of Rochdale Borough Council and their health partners, reduces social isolation through help and support provided by a dedicated team of staff.

Heywood resident Gladys Lynam, who felt isolated after her husband died four years ago, signed up for the scheme after hearing about it from a friend.

Mrs Lynam said: “It has been a fantastic service for me, a real life saver. I was basically housebound but now I am supported to get out and about to do my shopping. I have also been connected with local bingo sessions and other community events. I feel I have got my independence back and my life back.”

John McNiece, who lives in Heywood, said: “I am fit and healthy, but since my wife died I felt I needed more social outlets to meet new people. I was put in touch with some local community groups and it’s already improved my quality of life and provided me with a new group of friends and social networks.”

Councillor Iftikhar Ahmed, cabinet member for adult services, said: “This service is a vital lifeline for elderly and frail people, providing them with much needed help and support to improve their health and wellbeing. It also helps to reduce bed blocking and prevent unnecessary hospital stays. Well done to everyone involved in creating this important service.”
