Robert Clegg OBE, has announced he will step down as chairman of Hopwood Hall College Corporation Board after 15 years.

The Conservative Councillor for Wardle & West Littleborough Ward said he would be standing down in 2018 to as he looks to reduce his public commitments.

Among other high profile voluntary roles, Councillor Clegg is also chairman of the Springhill Hospice Board of Trustees and chairman of the Corporate Overview & Scrutiny Committee at Rochdale Borough Council.

In his message to the college, Councillor Clegg said: “I have been considering stepping down as chair[man] of the Hopwood Hall College Corporation Board for quite some time and have decided that as I am reducing other outside commitments this year, 2018 would be an appropriate time to end my tenure as a governor and chair.[man]

“This will allow someone else to pick up the reigns and take the college forward and position it to meet the challenges that undoubtedly lie ahead.”

Hopwood Hall College Principal, Derek O’Toole, said: “Robert has been a member of the Corporation since June 2003 and became chair[man] of the Corporation in October 2006.

“Robert’s passion and commitment to Rochdale and its people has been constant throughout this time. He has overseen two highly successful Ofsted inspections together with the extensive redevelopment of the college and its estate.

“Under his stewardship the college has become recognised as one of the highest performing colleges in the country. His support, wise counsel, strong advocacy and constant challenge have been instrumental to our success.”
