Liz McInnes MP: Autumn Budget response

Date published: 23 November 2017

Liz McInnes, Labour MP for Heywood and Middleton, has slammed the government’s Autumn Budget as ‘out of touch, an insult to our essential public services, and the clearest sign yet that we are worse off under the Tories’.

Liz McInnes MP says: "The government Budget offered no mention of the social care crisis, nothing at all for our schools which are being starved of resources, merely a fraction of the funding our NHS is crying out for, and appalling forecasts for our national productivity and economic growth.

"This government are the first in modern times to announce growth forecasts where growth in every year is less than 2%. It’s an unenviable achievement for the Tories and it shows that their ideological commitment to austerity and chronic under-investment is taking its toll on our economy and living standards.

"Real wages are lower than they were in 2010 and the Budget confirmed a further hit to living standards with average disposable income set to fall this year. Meanwhile, the National Living Wage has been revised down yet again meaning it won't hit the £9 per hour the Tories promised. In March, it was projected to be £8.75, now it has been cut again to £8.56.

"The priorities announced in this Budget are out of touch, an insult to our essential public services and every one of us who use them, and the clearest sign yet that we are worse off under the Tories".
