Councillors vote to support workers' rights and fight for fair wages

Date published: 15 December 2017

Councillors approved a motion to encourage care providers working with the council to recognise unions at the full council meeting on Wednesday (13 December).

The motion, to help support workers' rights and fight for fair wages, was moved by Councillor Liam O’Rourke and seconded by Councillor Daniel Meredith, a former care worker who shared his experiences with the council.

Councillor Meredith said: “I was bullied and blackmailed but I felt I had to do it because I’m a caring person by nature. I was asked to leave and told I should not be in the industry by that employer. At the time, I was not in a union and nothing was done.”

Councillor O’Rourke said: “It’s a simple ask for the Council to ask the companies used to accept and recognise Trade Unions in the work places. It’s one certain way to increase wages.”
