Sales of tin foil up 500% as Rochdale goes FA cup crazy ahead of Dale versus Tottenham tie

Date published: 14 February 2018

Sales of silver tin foil have increased by a whopping 500% as locals prepare for Dale’s historic FA Cup Fifth Round tie against Tottenham Hotspur, by making the cup out of tin foil.

The return of the nostalgic ‘home made’ FA Cup tradition – considered to be an FA Cup institution of days gone by – has resulted in bosses at the Asda Rochdale having to significantly up orders to deal with the demand.

Staff at the Dane Street superstore have also been giving customers lessons on how to make a tin foil FA Cup for themselves – so they can wave on them when Dale team play Premier League giants Tottenham on Sunday 18 February.

They have also made a quick six-step video showing people how to make one at home, ahead of the match.

Chris Hart, store manager at Asda in Rochdale, said: “The whole of Rochdale is so proud of the team’s achievements and there is a huge amount of excitement ahead of the weekend.

“At first we thought there was a mistake with our orders, but it turns out customers have been buying lots of tin foil to make a replica FA Cups, so we have ordered extra supplies ahead of the big match.

“Colleagues at the store have been making them too and showing people how to make them – it is a bit of a fun ‘magic of the FA Cup’ tradition – and it has taken off here as it is something you can do to show your support regardless of if you are old or young. It probably captures the essence of the fact that our small local team has gone so far and are now taking on the big boys.

“Some of the players actually shop here in the store and there is a real buzz about the place, with everyone is wishing them the best – and we will all be waving our tin foil FA Cups to bring them good luck against Tottenham!”

How to make a tin foil cup

You will need: cardboard, tin foil, glue, scissors, a pencil, a marker pen, a picture of the FA Cup, and some blue and white ribbons.

Step-by-step guide

1. Draw out your FA Cup
2. Cut out your drawing
3. Cover with glue and cut around tin foil
4. Wrap around the edges
5. Turn it over and draw on the detail
6. Tie on the ribbons in your club colours
7. Lift the cup

The tin foil FA cup is a tradition said to date back as early as 1957 in a match between Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic versus Manchester United.

Rochdale will be hoping to emulate their 2003 success when they reached the quarter finals of the famous cup.
