Local taxi driver’s car windows repeatedly smashed over the last month

Date published: 16 February 2018

Since the beginning of January 2018, local taxi drivers have been repeatedly targeted around the Rochdale borough and had their car windows smashed.

Taxi driver Nadeem Butt, who lives on Belfield Road but works for a Manchester based taxi company, came forward to comment: “I know of 30 or 40 drivers in the area who have been targeted and had their car windows smashed in January alone.

“I had mine smashed overnight twice last month within the space of two weeks; the first incident happened on Sunday 7 January and the other on Wednesday 31 January.

“I reported both incidents to the police and received crime reference numbers but since then nobody has contacted me or visited my house to get any details. None of us have heard anything about what they are doing to stop this.

“It is difficult because obviously we cannot work when this happens. I have been losing around £150 to £200 a day.

“It makes it even harder because we do not have any references as to who is doing this as none of us have CCTV where the incidents happen.

“I have to leave a sign in my car now that states no valuables are left inside it overnight, in the hopes this does not happen again. I have done this for the past two weeks and thankfully nothing has happened since.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “On Wednesday 31 January at approximately 10pm, police were called to reports of a smashed window on a motor vehicle.

“This incident happened between 9.45pm and 10pm.

“There has been no further update on the investigation so far.

“Anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers or 101.”
