Rochdale Town Hall saw young and old model rail enthusiasts enjoying the annual Heywood Model Railway Group exhibition this weekend.

The exhibition is being held over the two floors with layouts in the Great Hall and the rooms downstairs.

Layouts owned by the club and those of club members, along with layouts from other model railway clubs, were on display - many of which could be operated by visitors of all ages.

One exhibition which challenged young and old alike was the The Shunting Puzzle, OO gauge/4mm scale, with Graham Gatehouse very patiently explaining how it worked.

Isaac Journeaux, aged seven, and Noah Journeaux, aged six, were thrilled getting to grips with the points and hitching and unhitching to move trucks and waggons through the points to get the correct waggons attached to the engine for their journey.

Isaac said: “That was cool, moving the trucks.”

Noah said: “I really liked playing with the train and moving the points.”

Graham said: “Some people find it more difficult than others. I find that children now are finding it difficult as they are not used to using switches and turning dials. I don’t think they use them any more with swiping mobile phones and online games.”

The Heywood Model Railway Group was formed in 1969 by two or three enthusiasts who wanted to share their knowledge about model railways and originally met at one of the founder members houses in Heywood.

John Essex, Heywood Model Railway Group, said: “The club goes from strength-to-strength in 2018 with the large O gauge layout developing all the time and proving very popular with visitors on our open days.

“These open days have been a great success and we will continue to run them throughout the year on the second Saturday of each month.”
