Vigil held in support of those affected by domestic abuse

Date published: 19 March 2018

A vigil was held in support of those affected by domestic abuse on Saturday 17 March.

The vigil was a joint event organised by Alison Morris, Women's Officer from Rochdale Constituency Labour Party (CLP), and Denise Chadwick, Women's Officer from Heywood and Middleton CLP.

Denise Chadwick said: “The vigil was planned to take place at the Cenotaph in Rochdale Memorial Gardens.

“Due to the unfortunate blizzard conditions at 5.00pm on Saturday, the group were kindly offered shelter and a room for the vigil to go ahead inside Rochdale Town Hall.

“The event was supported by members from both CLP groups, who brought along candles and shared poems and made personal speeches.

“The vigil recognised the struggle and achievement of women across our history and today who fight for women's rights, and the inner strength of those women, who may find themselves victims of abuse.

“A minute’s silence was held at the end of the vigil where everyone in attendance was able to enter into silent prayer and reflection.

“Following the event, the group enjoyed a social time at a local curry house with good food and great company, in a friendly and pleasant environment.

"We would like to offer a special thank you to the officials who were on duty at the Town Hall on Saturday for their generous offer of a warm room."
