'Strange' package found in Whitworth

Date published: 10 May 2018

A strange/suspicious package, rumoured to be an improvised explosive device, found at Tong Lane in Whitworth on Friday (4 May) was determined to be a washbag, containing a deodorant canister and razor blades, which had been set on fire.

Inspector David Clarke from Rossendale Police said: “We're becoming aware of concerns being raised around an item found at Tong Lane in Whitworth last Friday evening. The information being shared is that this was an IED (improvised explosive device) 'packed with razor blades.'

“I can confirm that we did attend a report of a suspicious package last Friday. However, the property concerned was more akin to a washbag which had been set on fire. There were two razor blades present and the remains of a deodorant canister.

“We are aware that people camp in the area and it's unclear whether this was started deliberately or whether the can exploded having been left in the heat.

“We are taking the matter seriously, but at this stage in the investigation it is strange rather than suspicious.”

Anybody with any information is asked to contact Rossendale Police on 101 quoting reference LC-20180504-1411.
