A resident said: “There’s going to be a tragedy there one day.

“Only the other day we had a BMW crash at the entrance to the car park.

“People race across the dam, oblivious to the fact that the road is used by pedestrians.

“Further on, the tarmac slopes towards the water edge, people have fallen into the undergrowth and injured themselves.

“Two days ago, a large group of lads on bikes cycled on mass on both sides of the road, showing off and putting themselves in danger as they approached the bend.

“The wall separating pedestrians has been breached a number of times, only just stopping cars from going in the lake.

“Kids are always walking on the top of the wall next to traffic, the list of daft and dangerous behaviour I see every day is worrying.”

Andrew Storey, Head of Highways at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “We are aware of parking issues around Hollingworth Lake, but as many of these issues occur in unrestricted areas we do not have any powers to enforce.

“The police can potentially enforce on the grounds of obstruction to the path and dangerous parking, so we have made them aware of the issues in this area.

“In the longer term, we will be looking into reviewing the on-street parking around Hollingworth Lake and are hoping to start a consultation on this soon.

“We are also reviewing the amount of parking in the area.

"We would remind all drivers to park responsibly and think of pedestrians and other road users.”
