Vandals cause thousand pounds worth of damage in Rochdale park

Date published: 13 July 2018

Vandals have caused over a thousand pounds’ worth of damage in a park in Rochdale centre.

Members of the Vintage Worx Community Development Trust , who are based in Falinge Park, were greeted by the horrific sight of smashed steps and tarmac that had been dug up when they went in on Tuesday morning (10 July).

Tiles have also been torn from the apex of the roof and smashed on the floor, plus two holes smashed into the roof.

The damage will cost over a thousand pounds to repair.

Tracie Powers, of Vintage Worx, said: “One of the park users told me they had seen 28 adults in their early 20s up on the roof, and they should know better. They are setting a poor example for the younger children, who could seriously hurt themselves because that roof is high up. It is just not needed.

“We are checking CCTV to identify the culprits and police do patrol the park, but this is going to cost us money we just don’t have. Everyone is a volunteer here and now the money raised from our events is going to have to go into fixing the roof. We have had damp patches inside now with the rain.

“Despite this setback, we are all looking forward to our around the world celebration of traditional foods on 22 July with performances from Footlights Rochdale and Rossendale, plus a jamboree on the main field.”
