RBH world class approach to Heath and Safety
Date published: 10 December 2007
Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, the company that manages Rochdale Council's 14,300 housing stock, has been rated one of the top organisations in the world in terms of its commitment to health and safety in the workplace - receiving the British Safety Council's International Sword of Honour award.
The Sword of Honour is the ultimate accolade in the health and safety field and the British Safety Council annually receives submissions from a variety of businesses from right across the globe seeking this recognition. It is awarded to organisations that have demonstrated an enhanced commitment to health and safety that is embedded within the organisation.
The Sword of Honour was presented to Walt Leebetter, RBH's Health, Safety and Risk Manager, by Brian Nimick, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, at an awards ceremony held at the historic Goldsmiths' Hall in the City of London. 39 other organisations received the award - which is now in its 28th year.
RBH is the first organisation from the local government or social housing sector to receive this accolade.
All the winners received messages of congratulations from Her Majesty the Queen and from the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. The Prime Minister said: "I send my congratulations to all those organisations being presented with a Sword of Honour by the British Safety Council. These awards recognise the crucial success that these organisations and their employees have achieved in their pursuit of excellence in the management of health, safety and environmental matters."
The British Safety Council's adjudicator for the award said: "The Sword of Honour is the ultimate accolade in the health and safety field and the winners are exemplars of word class health and safety performance."
Gareth Swarbrick, RBH's Acting Managing Director said: "I am delighted that RBH has received this accolade which is a testament not just to the sustained hard work of Walt and the other members of RBH's Health and Safety Team but also the commitment of managers and staff from right across RBH. Everyone at RBH knows that health and safety is of paramount importance if we are going to deliver high quality services to customers."
