Springhill Hospice volunteers collect prestigious Queen's Award

Date published: 30 August 2019

Volunteer representatives from Springhill Hospice went along to the Gorton Monastery this week to collect their Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.

In a ceremony celebrating award winners from the North West, the team from Springhill were accompanied by Chief Executive of Springhill Hospice, Julie Halliwell and Chairman of Board of Trustees at the Hospice, Robert Clegg OBE. The group went along to collect their award which they received in June.

The awards were created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee. This year a total of 281 organisations across the country were awarded the prestigious accolade, however the award came during a milestone year for the Hospice as they celebrate their 30 year anniversary.

Hundreds of volunteers work at the Hospice across all areas to help give exceptional care to patients and their families. Some of those volunteers have been helping the Hospice since its doors opened back in 1989.

Julie said: “I am delighted that our volunteers have gained this recognition, and it is very fitting that this is in our 30th anniversary year. Our volunteers work across many areas, both inside the Hospice, and in our retail and income generation teams. Quite simply, we couldn’t operate without the support of our volunteers who are all incredible and certainly well deserving of this very prestigious award.”

Earlier this year Hospice volunteer representatives John and Jacqueline Ashworth, attended the Queen's Garden Party shortly after the win had been announced, alongside other recipients of the award.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities.
